Assessment

2008 Self Study

Summary of Recommendations

Assessment is the systematic collection of information about student learning to inform decisions about how to improve learning. The following three types of information are used to assess student learning. If you have any questions or ideas for the Assessment webpages, please contact Jason Myers at jmyers@nwic.edu or (360) 392-4274.

Direct indicators of student learning (outcomes) require students to demonstrate their learning through, for example, essays, capstone projects, demonstrations, presentations, oral accounts, and so on.

Indirect indicators of student learning (perceptions) ask students to reflect on their learning through, for example, surveys, focus groups, interviews, and so on.

    • Course evaluations (for students)
    • Graduate survey (for graduating students)
    • Peer review of teaching (for instructors)
    • Survey results and reports (Community College Survey of Student Engagement, Faculty Survey of Student Engagement, Student Opinion, Alumni, Teaching and Assessment Methods, and Needs Assessment)
    • Blank surveys (Institutional Health, Student Opinion, Alumni, Teaching and Assesssment Methods)

Institutional and tribal community data do not necessarily indicate student learning, but do reflect the overall condition and effectiveness of the college. These data include, for example, retention, graduation, enrollment, and transfer trends in the following reports:

    • Assessment Report (2007 - 2012)
    • Student Success
    • Fact Sheet
    • First Year Experience
    • American Indian Measures of Success (AIMS)
    • Enrollment
    • IPEDS
    • Transfer
