The mission of the Northwest Indian College (NWIC) Residence Life Center is to build a sustainable community through promotion of healthy living, leadership development, and embracing traditional ways of its residents and the community. Programming will enhance and strengthen individual access to culturally relevant education and personal growth.
Northwest Indian College currently has two student housing facility options. The first is located on main campus at the Residence Life Center (RLC). The RLC houses 65 students and 3 staff members. There are double and triple occupancy rooms available. All rooms have a private suite style bathroom, sink, desk, chairs, bunk beds, dressers and space for either a microwave or small fridge. The RLC also has a fully furnished lounge which includes: Television, Direct TV satellite, couches, chairs, dining set, kitchen and two computer stations. There is an onsite laundry facility, free WiFi and a dining hall where students have meals prepared for them. The quarterly meal plan is required for all residents.
The second option is the NWIC Family Housing at the Kwina Estates located within walking distance from main campus. There are four 2-bedroom apartments and six 1-bedroom apartments available. These units are not furnished. Residents of these units can purchase a quarterly meal plan but it is not required. This option requires an application obtained through Lummi Nation Housing Authority or from the Director of Residence Life.
Both housing options are drug and alcohol free facilities.
In the Fall of 2007, Northwest Indian College opened its doors to the new student housing and made a commitment to the education of the whole person. Research shows that students who belong to a campus residential community have a more productive, and ultimately more satisfying, college experience than those who live off campus. For this reason, the residential experience is considered an integral part of a student’s education.
Beginning in the Fall of 2008, all NWIC students who have 1 – 18 credits, are between the ages of 18 – 24 yrs. old, and all athletes are required to reside in the Residence Hall.
Students identified above are required to live on campus unless they are:
A student taking 1-9 credits may be required to live in student housing if space is available and other housing policy requirements are met.
Infrequent exceptions to this policy are made if unusual circumstances warrant such a decision. Students who believe they have a situation warranting special consideration to live off campus must obtain approval from the Office of Residence Life by submitting an Off-Campus Petition form, which provides the opportunity to describe the student’s situation and the reason for the request. The office must receive petitions for off-campus housing no later than September 1st for the subsequent academic year.

Since NWIC is giving single parents the option to live at the Residence hall with their child, ALL residents will be required to pass a background check prior to moving into student housing facility. Drug tests will be conducted within the first 15 days of student’s residency. Both of these screenings are done through NWIC approved process and background checks or drug tests done through other entities will not be accepted.

Applications will be processed after the $50 application fee is received. The fee can either be paid by check or money order and sent to our mailing address below OR by Visa or Mastercard over the phone at (360)392-4203. Applications May be Accepted After These Deadlines on a space-available basis. Background checks will be run the week of the Priority Deadline each quarter and all applicants will receive a letter from the RLC about next steps. If the application is received after the Priority Deadline it can take up to 7 business days to get results on the background check and then the letter will be sent.
Move-in dates differ each quarter and are listed in the letter the applicant will receive from the RLC. All applicants must schedule and confirm a move-in date and time with the Director of Residence Life to ensure that staff are available. There are many apartment complexes in the area on the Whatcom Transit Authority bus line. The average rental costs for apartments near NWIC can range in price from $500 per month for a studio apartment to $1200 for a three-bedroom apartment. Generally, these apartments are not furnished and students are required to buy all household necessities (bed, kitchen/cooking items, table and chairs, etc.).
