What is TENRM?

Northwest Indian College, in partnership with faculty from Huxley College of Environmental Studies at Western Washington University, offers a unique journey to students. Our Tribal Environmental and Natural Resources Management program (TENRM) is a course designed to build tribal managers who know and understand our precious land and its resources. We do this in a thoroughly Native way. The general education and core classes are taught at the NWIC main campus located in the Lummi Nation near Bellingham, Washington. The core classes, Indian culture and history, physical and life sciences, management, political science, and related communication courses, are taught in an integrated course. This means, for instance, that the student will not only learn about biology, but how biology relates to Indian culture, chemistry, math, and to the environment. In this block course, communication and leadership will be taught and practiced and the student will apply classroom knowledge though internship experiences. The general education courses allow the student to experience a wide variety of areas outside the core classes. These areas may be in Indian art, philosophy, drama, or literature. It is our hope that our students will become knowledgeable and compassionate in their understanding of culture and of nature. We hope they will bring with them their own traditions and practices so that TENRM can become a program that is founded on understanding, respect, and deep in the values of our Native Way.
