NWIC Cooperative Extension Receives Award for the NATIVE FAMILY EMPOWERMENT PROJECT

The Northwest Indian College Cooperative Extension Receives $90,000 Grant for the NATIVE FAMILY EMPOWERMENT PROJECT.

The Northwest Indian College recently received a $90,000 grant from the First Nations Development Institute of Longmont, Colorado.  This award will support the efforts of the Northwest Indian College’s Financial Literacy Program’s Native Family Empowerment Project.

The Native Family Empowerment Project (FNEP) will support Native parents pursuing higher education at the Northwest Indian College (NWIC) through “bundled services” that provide financial empowerment and family wellness. Services include financial coaching for personal budgeting and building credit, financial education classes, credit builder loans, income tax assistance, benefits screening and monthly family health and wellness activities. The FNEP will collaborate with other campus programs and the Lummi Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI) to make use of existing resources and services, and to ensure long-term sustainability of the services. “Many of Northwest Indian College students are student parents of young children.” said project coordinator Sunny Guillory. “With the launch of the Native Family Empowerment Project, NWIC Financial Literacy staff has an opportunity to provide monthly wellness activities and services that intentionally provide support to NWIC college student parents. One of the new, exciting services that is being provided is a VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) site that prepares free tax preparation services for NWIC students and Lummi community members.”

The NWIC Financial Literacy Program has worked with Native families at Lummi and in tribal communities across Washington by providing classes and workshops that empower individuals to best manage their money and reach their financial goals. The program staff, Sunny Guillory (Standing Rock Sioux) and Edna Revey (Upper Skagit/Lummi), are certified and experienced educators with over 10 years’ experience combined in Financial Education, Credit Coaching, Homebuyer Education, and Tax Assistance.
