SUMMARY:MLK Day: Educate\, Advocate\, and Activate
DESCRIPTION:Recently\, members of the King family called on the nation to commemorate the MLK holiday on January 17\, 2022\, as a DAY ON. Protecting voter access and expanding voting rights was central to Dr. King’s mission and the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 1960s. WWU\, along with our regional partners\, encourages our community to honor the King family’s request to educate\, advocate\, and activate in support of the Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act currently before the U.S. Congress. \nThis year’s virtual Martin Luther King Day event features a live interview with Dr. Ibram X. Kendi along with other speeches and performances from members of our community. We encourage our community to follow Dr. Bernice King’s advice to learn about America’s historic and current struggle for voting rights. Register to vote or update your address if you haven’t done so. Write or call your congressperson to share your thoughts on this important issue. Most importantly\, exercise your right to vote at election time. \nWe look forward to commemorating Dr. King’s legacy with you by making Jan. 17 a DAY ON to educate\, advocate and activate for voting rights. \nMLK DAY\nSPECIAL\nEVENT\nFeaturing New York Times best-selling author and 2021 MacArthur Fellowship (Genius Grant) recipient\, Dr. Ibram X.
