NWIC COVID-19 Update 07/31/2020
The College is taking every precaution to address COVID-19 in our plans and preparations this summer. First, we are still working on drafting a reopening plan template that each building will need to complete to demonstrate readiness to safely reopen. The goal is to finalize the template in two weeks. One important factor that has been determined is developing two types of templates: one for non-academics, and the other for academics/instruction. Some of the buildings have staff offices only, while others have a combination staff offices and classrooms, which may require specific protocols for staff, faculty and students, and therefore needs to be taken into account for planning purposes.
Second, this week, LIBC delayed the advancement of Phase III of the LIBC reopening plan and extended the shelter in place order to August 17. Additionally, Gov. Inslee earlier this week extended the pause on counties advancing phases under the state’s Safe Start Plan.
Although NWIC had hoped we would have been able to offer some face to face/in person classes this fall, even at a limited capacity, that is not a prudent and safe thing to do given the uncertainties and the recent COVID-19 spikes locally and nationally. Plus, again, the College cannot re-open until phase 4 of the LIBC reopening plan.
For fall quarter, all classes will be distance learning only; there will be no in person, face-to-face instruction in fall quarter. We are currently planning for winter quarter and spring quarter classes, including exploring distance learning options and the possibility of in-person classes at limited capacity or scale. The final determinations of whether winter quarter courses will be a combination of distance learning and in person classes, or distance learning only/no in person classes, is slated to be made next month (August).
Additionally, the Residence Life Center/dorms will not re-open this fall quarter. Our planning efforts will now shift to be to safely reopen in Winter quarter, unless otherwise indicated.
Thank you all for your continued patience and understanding during this process. I hope you and your families continue to stay safe and healthy.
