Yes! NWIC’s two-year and four-year degrees can be completed online. Some certificate programs cannot be completed entirely online. See here for programs of study online.
Yes! NWIC’s Distance Learning classes are taught by the same faculty who often teach in-person, and vice versa. Distance Learning classes will have slightly different expectations and etiquette from in-person classes; click here to see our tutorials on Zoom and Canvas for more details.
Talk to your advisor, or if you are located near an NWIC site at Swinomish, Nisqually, Muckleshoot, Tulalip, Nez Perce or Port Gamble S’Klallam, talk to your site coordinator. Click here to find site information.
Our Instructional Design team has you covered! You can attend an online tech orientation [link here] or if you just need a refresher, check out our many helpful tutorials!
You can take both online classes with regular meetings over Zoom, and classes that are asynchronous—which means there’s not a specific time to meet.
NWIC classes that use video conferencing will have a “VC” or “VCH” after the class’s name, for Video Conferencing. For these classes, the teacher will make sure you have access to a Zoom link through the “Zoom” item on the left menu in Canvas.Click here to see our class schedule.
Most NWIC video conferencing classes are taught by a teacher from their computer. In some cases, you may be participating with a classroom, on a high-quality camera interface that will let you interact with the teacher and other students.
A hybrid class will not meet in person as many hours as a normal class. Instead, hybrid classes will give you more work to do in Canvas.
For instance, a 5-credit hour class, when made a hybrid, might run for 2.5 hours a week on Zoom or in-person, but you would complete more work in Canvas. If your classes have an “H” in the designation, as in AH or VCH, they are hybrids.
OL stands for “online” and means a class that has no fixed meeting time, in which you’ll communicate with your teachers primarily through Canvas. You will still have weekly deadlines, and use the Canvas Discussions feature, which will allow you to talk to your fellow students in text-based discussions.
OL requires good study habits, and OL teachers do hold office hours on Zoom if you worry that you will be confused.
Classes that use Zoom to meet will be designated VC or VCH. Classes that do not have a fixed meeting time will be designated OL on your schedule. Your teachers will also message you at the beginning of the quarter with directions on how to sign in.
Some of your online courses will require textbook that are either online or a physical copy. If this is the case, you will want to order these at least a week before your class starts. Required textbooks must be posted by teachers to the class home page.
To order your text books must first request a book store voucher, then visit the bookstore website at nwic.bookstore.com to order books. There are a few steps involved, so we recommend clicking this link to an instruction guide, which outlines how to complete the full book ordering process.
NWIC offers two different tutoring services. Both are free and will come in handy!
The first resource is the Math and Writing Center. This service offers one-on-one help through Zoom, email, or in-person if you are on the Lummi campus. The tutors are either staff or students at the college . To reach out for a tutoring session, please email tutoring@nwic.edu
The second tutoring service at NWIC is TutorMe. This option is a third-party organization that offers around the clock assistance in a variety of subjects.
You can access TutorMe through your Canvas class in the left menu.
If you are not connected to a particular NWIC site, contact the advisors in Lummi.
If you are a student at one of our extended sites at Swinomish, Tulalip, Nisqually, Muckleshoot, Port Gamble S’Klallam or Nez Perce, contact your site coordinator.
One of the first things you’ll need to do after registering for your classes at NWIC is set up your student email, which we will go over in this tutorial. Once you do so, you’ll begin to receive announcements from NWIC and the instructors from your courses.
During your time at NWIC, you will need to check your email regularly to make sure you are not missing anything important.
You can also download the Outlook app, which gives you the option of receiving notifications when you receive a new email.
